CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Santana gathered her things and went to her bike. Thankfully the key was in the ignition and she pushed it out of the shed and straddled it. She felt eyes on her and looked around and then up and there was Mac standing in the doorway of the barns loft watching her. She ignored him, started the bike and left.
She made the long ride into Winston Salem in just under two hours and parked in a multi leveled garage close to all of the shops.
She found just what sheâd wanted in a small exclusive day spa where she got a massage, mani and pedicure, a Brazilian wax and a haircut. Her hair had always been long and straight. Sheâd never tried curling it or having it permed, and for as long as she remembered she had kept it long. Right now, it hung nearly to her narrow hips but that was fixing to change, she was fixing to change.
When Santana left the spa, she felt lighter, freer, and more sophisticated than she had ever felt in her life. Her new hairdo was shorter, much shorter, just past her shoulders in the back and cut in layers to give it body. The front was cut at an angle with choppy bangs that gave it a sassy look. She could part it in the center or at the side for different looks and she could wear her bangs down, swept back or half and half in a kind of retro 80âs look. She had also been shown different ways to wear her eye makeup that would give her eyes a smoky and mysterious look. She felt good and looked fantastic, and now she was going shopping.
By the time she got back to the farm it was almost nine and she was tired. Although her spa day had energized her the shopping that followed had worn her out. She had even considered spending the night at home, it would have been closer than the farm, but she didnât want anyone worrying over her unnecessarily.
She put her bike away and unstrapped the extra duffle that she always kept tucked away under the seat. It was now stuffed with her purchases from the day of shopping, toting it she walked to the house still wearing her helmet because her hands were full, the duffle was heavy.
She knew that everyone was home because all of the cars were in the yard and Macâs bike was in the shelter, but when she went inside the house was quiet and a tingle of alarm skittered up her spine. She dropped her bag by the steps and walked to Albertâs room taking off her helmet and gloves as she went. She slowly pushed the door open just in case he was sleeping, and he was, only the nurse was in the room with him sitting in the recliner doing a crossword puzzle. Santana gave her a finger wave and backed out of the room.
She was going back to pick up her bag when she heard voices coming from the living room, she detoured.
